Insta Algorithm Change

Written by Polly Yakovich | Apr 24, 2018

You may have heard: Instagram is adjusting their algorithm.

For those of you who are chronological purists, it isn't a complete return to the instagram of the past. But this adjustment will help to "give you more control over your feed and ensure the posts you see are timely," according to Instagram.

That means for those of us who have seen a picture of Bindi Irwin with a tarantula on her chest for the last 3 weeks: help is on the way.

There are a number of factors that influence what posts you see (including engagement, if you know the person, engagement, shares, other stuff, and ... engagement). The algorithm will change to more heavily weight new posts - so you'll want to post when your audience is most active on Instagram. Resources like Squarelovin are helpful for this.

You also may have to post more often. Previously if you had a post with tons of engagement, Instagram could show it to users for several days, extending the life of the post. With this change, older posts won't be promoted as much, which means you'll have to post more often to ensure you're in front of your audience regularly with great content.

How are you planning to change your Instagram post strategy with this algorithm change?
